Core Kit — Gear List for Cool to Cold Weather
I usually put together a gear list to make sure I get it right when it comes to clothing and gear for a trip. Each trip has its own specific characteristics, so each gear list is different.
Below is a general list that focuses on clothing (and, later, gear) that come in handy when adventuring in the Northeast in winter. Naturally, a long winter backpack in the Adirondacks in dead of winter will require a slightly different set of gear than what you’d need for a cold day in late fall in the Catskills. Having said that, this is indeed core kit: you’ll do well with it in Northeast winters and you’ll see a lot of other climbers using it in a wide range of conditions, including those found on Rainier or in the Alps in the summer.
